Parents
Father is Sonny Williams, born 1972 in Gallatin County, Montana. Grew up in Montana on the family cattle ranch. Attended Montana State University, where he was an AP All-American in football. Participated in Army ROTC, and was commissioned as an infantry Lieutenant after graduation in 1993. Completed Ranger training and was initially assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. Selected for Special Forces in 1995. A highly decorated operator, Williams was killed in action while on a classified mission in 2015.
Mother is Maya Williams, born Maya McPherson in 1973 in Nurnberg, Germany where her father was deployed as a US Army officer. Grew up on various army bases, finishing high school in McLean, Virginia while her father - at that time a Brigadier General - was on assignment with the White House National Security Council staff in Washington, DC. Attended Harvard University, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in International Studies and captained the varsity equestrian team. After completing a Masters Degree in International Finance at Johns Hopkins University, she was recruited by the US Central Intelligence Agency as an analyst specializing in tracking money flows to terrorist organizations. While on temporary assignment to support Special Forces at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina in 1998, she met and married US Army Captain Sonny Williams.
Childhood
Ash Williams was born in 1999 in Vicenza, Italy, where her father was serving at US military base Caserma Del Din while on assignment with US Army Africa Command, and her mother was on assignment with the US State Department. Her childhood years were split between various military bases and her grandparent’s cattle ranch in Montana, where she stayed while her parents were on frequent overseas deployments.
She attended multiple schools during her childhood, moving frequently depending on her parents’ assignments. An only child, her father treated her as the son he didn’t have - including introducing her to martial arts and weapons training beginning at an early age. By her early teens, she was an expert in most basic firearms, as well as a high level black belt in Taekwondo.
She excelled in school, but tended to make few real friends as she changed schools often. Her parents were deployed frequently targeting terror groups, and she spent significant periods with her grandparents on their ranch where she spent weeks on end on horseback with cattle or camping in the wilderness with her Grandfather.
When she was 14, she accompanied her father when he was deployed to South Korea as an advisor to the 707th Special Forces Group, that country’s most elite special forces unit - also one of the few special forces units in the world to include all-female teams. For the next three years, she trained full time at the “White Tiger” Taekwondo dojang - traditionally the training ground for both the 707th members and the discipline's leading Olympic contenders.
At the age of 17, Ash returned to the United States and shocked the Taekwondo world by winning the U.S. national championship as a virtual unknown. Her matches were characterized by a lethal speed and a brutality that often left her opponents either injured or unconscious. She immediately became one of the leading medal contenders on the US team for the upcoming Olympics. However, two weeks before she was to depart for the games, she was the victim of a horrific accident while riding her motorcycle. Hit by a drunk driver, she was left in a coma, and woke a week later with scars covering her arms, legs, torso, and part of her face.
While recovering from the accident, she received the tragic news that her parents had been killed in a helicopter crash while traveling to a NATO security conference. Three weeks later, she walked out of the rehabilitation facility where she was sent following the accident, and returned to South Korea where she disappeared behind the secluded walls of the White Tiger dojang.
US military records show that 2 years later, she walked onto a US Army base in a remote area of South Korea and requested to enlist. Later, her training records would note both her exceptional physical ability and her extensive knowledge and skill with a variety of weapons - the latter a legacy of her father’s training.
After completing basic and advanced infantry training, she qualified first for airborne training, and then for the US Army Ranger school, where she was only the second female to graduate, and the only female to graduate at the top of her class. Following Ranger school, she was assigned to the 82nd Airborne division at Ft Bragg, where she was subsequently selected for training as a Special Forces operator.
