There was once a boy who got shoved against lockers in high school and called sand n*gger and osama bin ladin growing up in a small white town in indiana with an absent father and broken family. In his PLTW intro to engineering course he was told he could never be an engineer because he couldn't comprehend isometric drawings. That same boy got a full ride, loving coworkers, & worked 40 hrs a week this summer while taking 21 credits of engineering summer classes virtually and is on track to graduate college two and a half years early. I think he developed his high for chasing rejection in every aspect of his life because it happened so often that he began to see it as a game as a method to avoid the crushing reality. It was those few successes of hundreds of attempts of everything that led him to where he is now.
I think to most people, including his family and friends, he's probably misunderstood. I mean, he's definitely creepy. He's also not the funniest boy in any of his classes, you can't even argue that he's the smartest because there are einsteins in all of his courses. On the other hand, on the surface, he looks average in just about every regard. He isn't tall, he has an average build, and his fashion is nothing to brag about. Ultimately, there's nothing truly notable about him. But his friends and allies describe him as fiercely loyal to himself and his circle. I think it's that loyalty that didn't allow him to give up on himself. That didn't allow him to give up on the same dream that he's still chasing.
While I would love to just leave his attributes as creepy and weird as a result of his actions, and I very much so doubt he's had any character development to speak of, I feel like it's a disservice to him. Which is strange because out of everyone in the world, the only person I hate and loathe is him.
