Life Story:
The dangers of violence taught me to respect those in charge. When I was an adult I wanted a career change and chose law enforcement, but I also wanted to do things right - believe in justice and doing what was right, etc. I put a lot of effort into staying out of trouble, following the law and working hard to earn respect from the community. Over time I learned that I was led to believe the system was fair, but it really isn’t there is no justice in this country, just authority and crime everywhere. I tried to stand up for my beliefs but eventually could not continue to do so against such a deep and highly powerful corrupt culture and ended up taking the corrupt path. I did not get there overnight; it was the system that created this corrupt culture.
Career Story:
After beginning my working life, my aim was to use my experiences of growing up in such a difficult environment to push myself to succeed and make a difference. My background gave me the proper tools (discipline and loyalty) to function properly in a society that finds it difficult to cope with and provide assistance to an individual who is under stress in order to survive.
Initially, I believed my hard work and the fact that I had “character” would provide me with success in my career. I paid attention to the development of my skills and abilities while following the established procedures and continually demonstrating my professionalism and reliability.
As I developed my skill set in my work environment, I applied the rules equally on all assignments, recognised the chain of command, and assumed my integrity as an honest person would be accepted and rewarded by the system. But as I became aware of the realities of how business is run, I discovered that it was often based on whom you knew rather than what you actually did; and that the organisations to whom I was employed condoned corruption as long as it helped “kick- backs” within the company.
I initially resisted compromising my moral values. However, as a result of constant pressure and observing others advance through questionable practices, I began to change my way of viewing things. Small choices (compromises) became patterns (habits) that weren’t going to change my ability to get by and remain “current” in the business world.
As I previously stated, I still operate with a calculated and professional approach. However, I have learned that the pursuit of power will not sustain integrity and therefore I must be cautious about how I manipulate my relationships.
