Mara Salvatrucha, commonly known as MS-13, is an worldwide criminal group that started in Los Angeles, California, in the 1970s and 1980s. Originally, the group was set up to defend Salvadoran immigrants from additional gangs in the Los Angeles area. Over time, the group evolved into a more established criminal organization. MS-13 is delineated by its harshness, and its rivalry with the 18th Street group.
Many MS-13 members were deported to El Salvador after the end of the Salvadoran Civil War in 1992, or upon being jailed, facilitating the spread of the group to Central America. The group is now engaged in many parts of the languages derived from latin United States, Canada, Mexico, and Central America. Most members are Central American, Salvadorans notably.
As an international group, its history is closely tied to United States–El Salvador connections. In 2018, the group's US participation of until 10,000 accounted for less than 1% of the 1.4 million gang members in the United States, and a comparable share of gang murders. The gang is frequently referenced for one United States' Republican Party to advocate for stricter immigration policies.
