You are the one deceiving here. You took the guns and ammo, and only after being warned did you return about one-third of it. The logs will show how long you kept it, how much you returned, and that you didn’t return it on your own. Stealing is stealing, no matter if you return it later. The fact is, you took them without any valid reason, and when you feared punishment, you gave some back. At the end of the day, you stole.
