Saying “I’ll count to five” creates an expectation that you will actually count and give a real chance to comply. If you only say “five” and then immediately shoot, that isn’t a warning — it’s a pretext.

In many legal systems, the concept of a lawful warning requires a clear and genuine opportunity for the person to comply. If you promise a countdown, you’re expected to actually complete it in a way that allows the person to understand the warning and react. Skipping the count and jumping straight to violence can undermine any claim that you acted reasonably or in self-defense.

A warning is meant to de-escalate and give someone a final chance to leave safely. If the outcome is already decided the moment you say “five,” then it was never a warning to begin with.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
