Life for Diaz was not simple growing up. Since his family moved frequently and lacked money, he realized early on that survival depended on seizing every opportunity presented. Diaz looked trustworthy because of his EMS history when he joined the LSPD, and his bosses quickly came to trust him. In his early months, he diligently adhered to the regulations in front of the wrong individuals while secretly learning how the department genuinely operated behind closed doors. He observed which police took bribes, which units neglected specific offenses, and how much money went through the system undetected.
Diaz started to behave once he grasped the mechanics of things. To determine who could pay and who could not, he drew on the same intuition he had in his EMS days: reading people fast and remaining cool under pressure.
