Background of the Family: The Fujiwara clan is a family of Japanese nobility that gave many regents to Japanese emperors during the Nara and Heian periods, from the 8th to the 12th centuries of the Gregorian calendar. The clan existed from the Kodai period to the Kinsei period, but branches of the clan continued to play an important role in the Japanese aristocracy until the modern era. In the Heian period, the official family name was Fujiwara, but after the Kamakura period, each one keeps its original name, Fujiwara being used only for official family reasons. The name Fujiwara means "wisteria enclosure".
